Clemmy’s Story

“Clemmy became part of Hope Animal Rescue in November of 2017. He was brought into a rural county shelter as a stray. He was covered in dirt, had cuts all over his face + body, had a bacterial skin infection + several teeth that were either chipped or filed all the way down to the root, and he wound up testing positive for heartworms. He was pretty timid and skittish in his foster home at first. You couldn’t raise your hand over his head and you had to be really careful about respecting his personal space when he was asleep so as not to startle him. It was clear he had been neglected and likely hadn’t received much love or care. We’d come to find out several months later that Clem was actually left tied to a tree on an abandoned property when his owners moved. They apparently took all of their other dogs, but left Clem. He eventually managed to chew through the chain he was left on and that’s when animal control was finally able to get involved.

Despite his past, the most amazing thing happened over time, though. He started to relax and began to trust us. He went from not being able to be touched while he was sleeping to willingly choosing to curl up in a ball and fall asleep on top of you. He went from having zero interest in playing with other dogs to spending much of his day chasing and playing with his foster sister. His skin infection cleared up and he underweight heartworm treatment, too.

He literally blossomed (no joke - he came to us with no spots on his fur and now he’s covered in them...so much so that we call him the Mini Spotted Hippo!) and became a completely different pup.

Clem became a foster failure a few months after we took him in. He now spends his days either tucked into bed with his blankey and heating pad or or sunbathing on “his” deck. He’s also been promoted to foster brother and gets to help his pawrents foster lots of other neglected bully breed pups through Hope Animal Rescue.” Follow Clemmy on his momma’s Instagram at @veronica_lea.
